Project launches in Ullapool

The Centre for History, University of the Highlands and Islands, was thrilled to officially launch ‘Resistance to ‘improvement’ in the Highlands and Islands, 1750- c.1820′ back in March 2025 in Ullapool.

The launch marked the first in-person meeting of the research team, composed of Iain Robertson (UHI), Carl Griffin (University of Sussex) and Juliette Desportes (UHI).

The team was recently successful in securing a three year grant from the Leverhulme Trust.

The project will explore acts of protest and everyday resistance over the whole period of the ‘first phase clearance’ in the Highlands and Islands. It will involve extensive archival research across Scotland, including at the National Records of Scotland, Inveraray Castle, Highland Archives Centre, and the National Archives in Kew.

You can find out more about the project here.
